buffet weekend

Peaceful weekend; read some of Shapiro’s Clinical Applications of Blood Gasses and ate goat cheese and crackers we bought on a family trip to a cool NH farmstand. Bought a new 20 perch thistle feeder which only 24 hours after installation had 13 finches perched on it! Quite a display. On NPR I caught some of the speakers from the Women’s march on Washington; good stuff. Also able to get out on the bike w/Chris and did 70+ miles. Did some shopping and errands with J.

jaxb pretty cool

Using jaxb for value object management in java. Nice attribute oriented approach to the value object problem. Autogenerates the VOs and marshallling/unmarshalling code to (de)serialize to XML. Nice. Also allows for object heirarchies and enumerated types! Sweeet! Some kind of JDBC persistence mechanism would be sweet. Found this article on jaxb + jdo; looks promising. If this could be all tied together with something like xdoclet you could really have a sweet high performance, scalable j2ee infrastructure (minus business logic) mostly generated for you with free tools.

o my head

Found myself in harm’s way this past Wednesday as I hit my noggin pretty good. Woke up in hospital not knowing who I was, what time of the year it was or even how old I was. Lost time & lost memory = freaky. I cling pretty dang hard to my silly little reality and having it pulled out from under me in an uncontrolled way was pretty frightening; moreso than any other injury I’ve sustained and I’ve had my share. Now that the haze has finally cleared I am feeling pretty good; like a new day. Thanks to everyone who’s helped me through this with your kind words, emails, phonecalls and visits.

The waters subside

Unfortunately lost some stuff stored in the flood due to water damage. An antique couch, 3 chairs, 2 filing cabinets, 2 bins of old computer parts. Ugh. Luckily the more important items we had ‘up on high’ and didn’t get wet at all. The water also extinguished the pilot lights on the furnace and hot water heater. Not too big of a deal to get back online; just like lighting a gas grill. But all and all blew away most of the weekend. Spending your birthday taking mouldy furnature and molten cardboard to the dump in the rain is no picnic. Thanks to AG and JL for the incredible amounts of help.

Missed the Marblehead race. Just too much going on with the flood and the house. Not spending enough time on the bike to race just yet. Getting creamed is not fun racing. Now we’re on DST I can start the patented sean langford (over)training programme. w00t!

Saw two beavers swimming outside this morning on the pond. They must be busily attending their structures certainly damaged this weekend..

biblical flooding

So 9.5 of water in the basement overnight. I think the very bottom of the basement is only about 6 inches above the average top of pond water line. When the pond floods more than 6 inches, the basement immediately fills up with force and it seems no amount of pumping will diminish the level because, in effect I think we’re pumping against the entire pond… We currently have over 5000ci/m worth of pumps going and the line hasn’t budged. Oh well. Its a good purging excercise I guess; now a whole new category of crap can now be culled in the name of water damage. Sadly this is the year we didn’t store the canoe in the basement..
