Gentoo Linux, a new and up and coming linux distribution demonstrates the way OSS software should be distributed. Currently they offer a distro which couples the benefits of a package management like auto download system (ala RedHat, Debian) with the benefits of local compilation (ala Slackware). The end result is a maintainable. high performace distribution. Awesome! The folks over at Open Embedded have used Gentoo’s model to distribute their cross platform PDA os/application suite. Great stuff! Aggrigate the source in one location; build it to suit your specific hardware. No more running 386 compiled code on your Xeon for the sake of convenience!
